BRIDGEWATER,Va. – Two law enforcement officer were shot in a gun-related incident at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia.

A Bridgewater College Campus Law Enforcement Officer and Campus Safety Officer were shot, according to Virginia State Police.

The agency did not release their conditions at this time.

The initial report came in that two officers had been shot and that the shooter had fled the scene. A massive search was mounted and a male suspect was arrested at 1:55 p.m.

One person was in police custody after a Virginia college warned the campus of a report of a possible shooting, urging people to shelter in place, school officials said Tuesday.

Bridgewater College tweeted that a person was in police custody about 45 minutes after first tweeting the warning. But the college said that students should continue to shelter in place until police officers come through buildings and give them instructions. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin tweeted that he had been briefed on the situation, and: “The shooter is in custody and state and local police are on the scene.”

No other details about the situation were available. The Virginia State Police didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The private liberal arts college about 125 miles northwest of Richmond had an enrollment of about 1,500 full-time students in fall 2021, according to its website. The school is historically affiliated with the Church of the Brethren.

Deputies from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office responded initially to reports of an active shooter at the college.

The shooter is in custody, according to a tweet from Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

“I have been briefed on the situation at Bridgewater College. The shooter is in custody and state and local police are on the scene. I will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with law enforcement,” Youngkin said.

The Harrisonburg Police Department has also responded to the scene. The FBI is also sending agents to the scene, according to a spokesperson.
