(Danville, Va.) — An inmate who suffered from “notable health issues” died in the Danville Jail Saturday morning.

He has been identified as 53-year-old Raymond Lea Massey. According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy was informed by another inmate that Massey was ill and needed medical attention around 6:30 a.m.

The jail nurse assessed Massey and gave him his morning medication, and then checked on him again at 7:15 a.m.

At that point she determined that he needed emergency medical attention. The Danville Lifesaving Crew was called and Massey was being loaded onto an ambulance when he stopped breathing. CPR was performed en route to the hospital, where Massey was pronounced dead.

Massey’s body was taken to the medical examiner in Roanoke for an autopsy.

He had been jailed since February 27, 2018, following his conviction of carnal knowledge of a minor.

Massey was serving a sentence of two years and six months.
