(Halifax Count, Va.) _- A series of strong thunderstorms ripped through Halifax County Tuesday afternoon, downing trees and blocking roads in the northern end of the county.

Most of the damage was reported along the James D. Hagood Highway near South Boston Speedway, where winds toppled trees in a mid-afternoon storm. A second storm splintered more trees, leaving one atop a truck in the Shepherd’s Gate community. There were no reports of injuries.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Halifax County just before the storms hit. The area was hammered by high winds and heavy rains. The storms were spawned by a strong cold front, which passed through the area on Tuesday.
