HALIFAX COUNTY, VA — An Alton man faces a DUI-manslaughter charge following a fatal accident in Halifax County.

Virginia State Police say the driver, 55-year-old Thomas P. Doyle, was intoxicated when his truck left the road and hit a tree. A passenger in the vehicle, Theresa Goetz of New Jersey, died at the scene. Doyle refused medical treatment.

The wreck happened just after 8 p.m. Tuesday on Traynham Grove Road near Hickory Road in Halifax County.

State police say a 1988 Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on Traynham Grove Road when it ran off the left side of the road. The driver over-corrected, which caused the pickup to cross back over the road and run off the right side of the roadway, where it struck a tree. Investigators say most of the damage was to the passenger side of the vehicle.

Goetz was wearing a seat belt but died as a result of her injuries.

Doyle was arrested for DUI-Manslaughter and transported to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
