SAN PEDRO, BELIZE — A woman has been arrested in the murder of a Roanoke cardiologist and his tour guide in Belize.

Dr. Gary Swank and his guide, Mario Graniel, were gunned down in their skiff while on a fly fishing trip in the San Pedro Town Lagoon Sunday morning.

News 5 Belize reports that the prime suspect in the double homicide is a woman and that she was one of several people who have been detained in connection with the double homicide.

The television station reports that the woman was close to Graniel and allegedly played a key role in the murders of both men. The tour guide was the target of the shooter and Swank was shot because he was a witness to Graniel’s murder. Swank was what San Pedro police described as “collateral damage.”

Swank was 53 and was on vacation with his wife and three young children.

The Central American country has been plagued by violence recently and officials in Belize say they are working to address the problem.
