(Richmond, Va.) — A southwest Virginia senator is pushing legislation that would require every Virginia high school offer a Bible class as an elective.

Republican Sen. Bill Carrico says that other states have offered similar bills and he thinks this is something that is needed in the Commonwealth.

He’s backing Senate Bill 1502, which is working its way through committees now in the General Assembly.

The bill would require Virginia school districts to offer courses on the Old Testament, New Testament or both as an elective for high schools students to choose from.

President Donald Trump gave his stamp of approval in a tweet.

Carrico says “the Bible is full of stories and has a lot of issues that I think the country is lacking today.”
