MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Two Martinsville men are in jail after a bomb they were making discharged accidentally. Police say the pair didn’t plan to use the explosive device and were just experimenting when it went off in James Marvin Hundley’s face. The 37-year-old was treated by EMS responders and then flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

It happened just before 10 p.m. Friday. The Martinsville-Henry County 911 Communications Center received a call that a firecracker had exploded in a man’s face at 124 Konya Drive in Martinsville.

Deputies determined that it wasn’t a firecracker that exploded, but rather a homemade bomb. They also learned that Hundley and another man built the explosive device.

Hundley and 52-year-old Jonathan Wayne Hubbard are both charged with possessing materials to manufacture an explosive device and possessing an explosive device. Hundley is being held in the Roanoke City Jail with a $1,500 secured bond. Hubbard is in the Martinsville City Jail with no bond.
