ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. – A Danville woman has been charged with child abuse after North Carolina investigators say she left her child unattended in a car while she and a friend gambled.

40-year-old Claudia Denise White of Lansbury Dr. in Danville and 23-year-old Keyarra Symone Hairston of Martinsville were both arrested on Sunday. Each faces one count of misdemeanor child abuse.

Investigators say sheriff’s deputies arrived at the Internet Café on US 220 about 1 a.m. Sunday and found two children inside the vehicle. The engine was off and the hood was cold to the touch.

Deputies say that White and Hairston had both been inside the gaming establishment for 2-to-3 hours while the kids were left unattended. Each is mother to one of the children.

Both were arrested and placed in the Rockingham County Jail under a $20,000 secured bond. They are scheduled to appear in court April 2.
