ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. – A man charged with killing two motorcyclists in Rockingham County has been extradited to North Carolina.

Martin Calvin Cox Jr., of Browns Summit, is in custody in Rockingham County following his arrest recently near Louisville, Kentucky.

According to Sheriff Sam Page, Cox was taken to the Rockingham County Detention Facility from the Bullitt County Detention Facility in Kentucky Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators said in May that Cox shot three people riding motorcycles on Highway 29 near Reidsville in the area of the Barnes Street overpass after following them from a gas station just off the highway. Two of the victims died from their injuries.

24-year-old Kwandre’ Marcell Carey of Montross, Virginia was pronounced dead at the scene. Later that evening, Haneefa Fitzgerald, 42, of Fredericksburg died after being transported to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The sheriff’s office is not releasing the name of the surviving victim “due to safety concerns.”

Investigators say they have not established a motive but believe this was a targeted shooting and not a random act.

Cox was captured in the town of Shepherdsville in Bullitt County, Kentucky.

He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
