An Emerson University Poll released Wednesday shows Republican Glenn Youngkin in a dead heat with Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the race to become Virginia’s next governor.

The survey of likely voters, conducted between October 1 and 3, shows McAuliffe with only a one point lead over Youngkin, 49-48 percent. Emerson’s last poll of the race from September showed McAuliffe leading Youngkin by four points.

A number of factors could be contributing to the narrowing race. The political climate of the country appears to be shifting in Republicans’ favor as President Biden’s domestic agenda stalls, economic growth remains sluggish, and the administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan continues to draw criticism. Biden won Virginia by ten points last November, but the president’s approval rating is now underwater by three points.

After being informed of Biden’s endorsement of McAuliffe, only 22% of respondents said it made them more likely to cast their ballot for the Democratic nominee. 39% said it made them less likely.

McAuliffe referenced Biden’s low approval numbers in a video that surfaced this week, warning Democrats to turn out the vote in the state.
