DANVILLE, Va. – While Danville didn’t get the 1-to-3 inches of snow predicted by the National Weather Service, the area did experience some icing in the winter storm.

The precipitation started as light rain in Danville Friday night but quickly transitioned to snow. The city received a light dusting of snow overnight with no real accumulation.

Gusty winds and temperatures at or below freezing are in the forecast for Saturday, ensuring that what fell will linger throughout the day. Skies will clear but temperatures will dip to the lower teens Saturday night, with wind gust as high as 32 mph during the day and up to 20 mph Saturday night. The latest forecast calls for a high of 41 in Danville on Sunday.

Officials from Virginia to Massachusetts declared states of emergency, imposed parking bans and warned of hazardous travel in advance of wet, heavy snow that fell as fast as 5 inches per hour. Parts of 10 states were under blizzard warnings.

Amtrak canceled or limited weekend train service along its busy corridor from Washington to Boston.

Snow began falling Friday evening in parts of Appalachia and swept northward from there and the Carolinas.
