Monday was the first day of school for Danville Public Schools. The Danville Police Department had members of the department on hand to greet students and parents as they returned.

Public Relations Specialist for the Danville Police Department, Matt Bell, touched on how the department is addressing security concerns for the schools.

“So part of what the Danville Police Department has is five school resource officers who go through the school daily, check on things and answer any questions that they may have. It’s an opportunity for them to be able to interact with students and talk to them and address any concerns that may have,” said Bell.

Bell also touched on the Reach One Program that the department has to help students that struggle with behavioral problems.

“Students who have behavioral or disciplinary issues or grades are slipping, those students then become part of the Reach One Program to get on the path of improving their grades and improving their behavior. Doing what they need to do to learn about disciplinary actions and why they shouldn’t be getting those and just get them back on the right path again,” said Bell.
