The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors have approved the advertisement of the county’s budget for fiscal year 2025. The budget features a slight cut in the tax rate, however most property owners will pay much more next year due to a reassessment showing a nearly 50% increase in property values.

The current tax rate in the county is $0.62 per $100. The proposed rate in the new budget sets the rate at $0.59.

“This rate allows us to do the new things that we mentioned, catches us up to strengthen the organization and impact the community for 2025 and will allow for some growth over the following three fiscal years including the debt reserve fund, which is new, and can help plan for the future for our large capital items such as the jail and courthouse,” said County Administrator Stuart Turille.

The tax rate in the county hasn’t changed in six years. Supervisor Robert Tucker noted that the tax rate could still be adjusted during the budget process.

“$0.59 is actually the ceiling, according to state statute, ” said Tucker, “we cannot increase from 59%, but we can lower it from 59% once advertised and we’re going to make sure that all of us work collaboratively together to make sure that its fair.”

The Board of Supervisors will hold a budget public hearing on March 28.
