An explosion and massive fire in South Hill on Saturday was caused by a car hitting a power pole and propane tank in front of a warehouse. According to the News Progress, the fire occurred at the Nutrien Warehouse on West Danville Street.

The driver of the vehicle later died at the hospital. 15 firefighters were also injured and sent to VCU for treatment.

Several area fire departments responded to assist including the Danville Fire Department’s Hazmat Team. The Red Cross responded to assist as well.

The incident occurred just before 2 pm on Saturday and the fire was deemed under control by 8 pm. The South Hill Police Department cautioned that a large amount of runoff coming from the fire is going into creeks in the area. At this time the levels are non hazardous but the department is urging people to avoid the creeks.
