CHATHAM, Va. – Bond has been denied for a Pittsylvania County man who allegedly killed a lifelong friend in an argument over some compact discs.

A Pittsylvania County judge has denied bond for 44-year-old Montel Oakley, who is charged with murder in the shooting death of 44-year-old Corey Moon.

The fatal shooting happened during an argument at Oakley’s home in the town of Hurt. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 3900 block of Pocket Road earlier this month after someone reported that a person had been shot. They arrived to find Moon dead of gunshot wounds.

Oakley told officers that during an argument, Moon retrieved an AK-47 from his vehicle. He said the two fought over the gun. Oakley gained possession of the weapon and told investigators on scene that it “went off 3 or 4 times.”

Oakley was initially charged with manslaughter but now faces a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death.

He continues to be held without bond in the Pittsylvania County Jail.
