DANVILLE, Va. – The severe thunderstorms that rumbled through Danville Monday night knocked out power to much of the city, including all of Main Street through the Forest Hills subdivision.

A lightning strike at one of the city’s transmission delivery points from AEP knocked many customers offline. This delivery point feeds several substations.

Utility crews worked through the night to restore power but that had to be done in stages. By 11 p.m., most customers were back online. The substations serving Westover and north Danville, Brosville/Callands, and the Tunstall/Whitmell and Kentuck areas were all affected and service was restored to most during the early morning hours Tuesday.

An online outage map indicated as many as 27,000 Danville Utilities customers may have been affected by the outage.

The storm also prompted a flood advisory through 10 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service estimated that Danville received between 1-to-3 inches of rain in the storms.

Appalachian Power reported smaller storm-related outages in Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania and Pulaski Counties.
