Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday in Halifax County. The crash occurred on Route 501, near Stage Coach Rd.

At approximately 8:19 pm, a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on Route 501. The Jeep crossed into the southbound travel lane to pass the vehicle in front of it. As it did so, the Jeep encountered a 2004 Honda Civic traveling in the southbound lane. Both vehicles swerved to try and avoid one another, but ended up striking each other head on. The vehicle that was being passed was not involved in the crash.

The driver of the Honda was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries. The only passenger in the Honda, Soriah R. Lunt, 23, of Buena Vista, Va., died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt. 

The driver and five passengers in the Jeep were all transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. 

The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending.
